OUR STORY · FROM A 2020 LOCKDOWN TO A FORE STREET SHOP

From a Postal Pantry in lockdown to a shop on Fore Street.

Porridge began as Postal Pantry, registered on 30 July 2020 during the first national lockdown. Andrew and Clare Brayshaw started a small Devon delivery and UK mail-order service for wholefoods and eco essentials, run from the spare room, dispatched into an empty Post Office queue.

The Brixham shop came in 2022. Sally and Alan had spent years running Oats Healthy Living Store from 13 Fore Street as a community-focused health food shop for the people of Torbay. When they decided to retire and change the pace of life, they chose a successor business rather than leave the unit empty. The Brayshaws took the keys, repainted the fascia sage green, and opened the cafe alongside the pantry.

Today Clare and Cal are on the counter, six days a week, and a small electric delivery van runs locally around Devon. The original Postal Pantry side still ships UK-wide. The Food Drink Devon Business of the Year 2020-21 plate still hangs on the wall behind the bar.

SUPPLIERS WE STAND BEHIND

Why Voyager and Bio-D are on our shelves.

Most independents will tell you they care about provenance. Two suppliers carry more weight than the rest on our shelves, and both have a story longer than a bag label.

  • Voyager Coffee Roasted in Penzance, Cornwall. Single origins from named farms, a house blend that suits espresso and the cafetiere both. We pull it on the bar in the cafe and we sell the bag at the till. The Swiss water decaf is the customer favourite.
  • Bio-D refill B Corp from Hull, made on solar energy. Naturally derived cleaning and laundry. The refill station means you bring your bottle, top it up, pay by weight. Most independents stock the bottles, fewer carry the larger refill containers and a real station.
  • Viridian supplements 100% active ingredients, ethically sourced, no nasties. On the shelves behind the counter so the conversation about what you actually need happens face to face, with someone you'll see again.
  • Local cakes The glass-domed cake stand is restocked through the week by local bakers. The Pastel de Nata at £2.50 sells out by mid-afternoon most Saturdays.
